Director's note
Risk was the theme of our evidence to the Parliament’s transport committee.

Setting out the “broader risk context”, Paul Tetlaw outlined the risks of a Corona Recovery that sees a “great expansion of car use” at the expense of public transport: air pollution, climate emissions, obesity, car-clogged cities, and the undermining of decades of growth in rail travel.

“[I]f we consider public transport alongside other modes of transport, … we know […] that travelling by train is 20 times safer than travelling by car in terms of the likelihood of dying in an accident, and that it is hundreds of times safer in terms of the likelihood of being seriously injured. Similarly, travelling by bus is much safer than travelling by car."

Campaigns update
In May, Transform Scotland published four ‘National Development’ proposals in response to the Scottish Government’s consultation on the new National Planning Framework (NPF4).

Since then, publication of NPF4 has been delayed from this September until autumn 2021. Given previous commitments to develop NPF4 in tandem with the Strategic Transport Projects Review (STPR2), we have been left wondering whether this too will be delayed into next year. Given the importance of these two processes to sustainable transport in Scotland, we will be monitoring news on this closely.

In our covering letter, we set out two principal focuses for the government to pursue: Better Cities & Better Links..

Corona REcovery
The Corona Crisis is severely impacting Scottish society and, as we are beginning to see, it will have long-lasting effects. We have been discussing with our members what that future might look like for transport and how we can ensure that the Corona Recovery leads us to a fairer, greener and more robust transport system.

Throughout June, we have published a 'Recovery Series' of reports that focus in on central challenges that the transport sector is facing and accompanied these with a series of videocalls. The first two reports have been published over the last two weeks and address 'Just Recovery: reversing the lockdown inequalities' and ‘Active Recovery: Locking-in the active travel benefits’.
